Motagua, New York Red BullsHonduras reached the 2001 Copa América on a Colombian air force plane after the tournament had already kicked off, knocked the holders Brazil out 2-0 in Manizales, and he flew home with the best player award and third place. Three years later he was MLS MVP with the MetroStars, tied for the league's scoring lead on ten goals, and he captained Honduras at the 2010 World Cup before finishing with 138 caps and 27 goals. Olimpia, Tottenham HotspurSouth Africa 2010 put three Palacios brothers in one Honduras squad, Wilson alongside Jerry and Johnny, the first set of three brothers a single nation had named at a World Cup. Five Liga Nacional titles with Olimpia sit at the top of his record, followed by the £12 million Tottenham paid Wigan for him in January 2009, then a fee no Central American had commanded, and 97 caps across two World Cups. 4 CP 83 Carlos Pavón 101 caps · 67 goals · Club Celaya, Club Atlético MoreliaPavón finished the 2007 Gold Cup as its leading scorer with five goals, one ahead of Landon Donovan, and was named in the team of the tournament. He remains Honduras's record scorer with 57 goals in 101 caps, played at the 2010 World Cup, won UNCAF titles in 1993 and 1995, four Honduran championships with Real España and the Mexican Clausura with Morelia in 2000. Olimpia, FC DallasAt the Britannia on 12 December 2009 he lined up a free kick around 35 yards out and put it over everybody on 72 minutes, an equaliser at Stoke that the BBC voted its goal of the season. He holds the Honduran appearance record with 181 caps between 2003 and 2022, played at the World Cups of 2010 and 2014, won four league titles with Olimpia, and was part of the Wigan side that took the FA Cup in 2013. OlimpiaSixteen years in the Honduras goal produced 135 caps for Valladares, and the pick of them came at the 2010 World Cup, where he shut out Switzerland and was named man of the match. He was voted best goalkeeper of the 2011 Gold Cup, kept goal at both the 2010 and 2014 World Cups, and won nine Honduran league titles with Olimpia. GK2010–14

Motagua, CelticCeltic paid £650,000 for him in August 2010, and by the end of that season his fellow professionals had voted him PFA Scotland Players' Player of the Year, the first Honduran to win it. Seven Scottish league titles followed between 2011-12 and 2018-19, along with three Scottish Cups, two League Cups, and 111 caps for Honduras taking in the 2010 and 2014 World Cups. LB2010–18

Hibueras, Elche CFOn 4 July 1965 he settled the Copa del Generalísimo final at the Bernabéu, a 65th-minute goal that beat Real Zaragoza 1-0 in front of 90,000 and gave Atlético Madrid their revenge for losing the same final a year earlier. That cup sat alongside the 1965-66 Spanish league title with Atlético, and before Madrid he had been the Segunda División's top scorer with 22 goals as Elche won promotion in 1958-59, going on to 24 top-flight goals for the club. ÁguilaHonduras led the hosts in Valencia on 16 June 1982, Héctor Zelaya scoring inside eight minutes with Maradiaga captaining the midfield, and Spain needed a 65th-minute penalty to save the point. That team had reached the World Cup by winning the 1981 CONCACAF Championship at home, and Maradiaga's own record holds 47 caps, a league title with Motagua, and third place at the 2001 Copa América, taken from the bench as national coach. United debut, and that season ended with him voted MLS Rookie of the Year; four years later he opened the scoring against Arsenal in Brussels before two Arsenal goals in the last two minutes took the game away. Three Belgian league titles with Anderlecht, two Super Cups, the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, 65 caps for Honduras and the 2025 U.S. Open Cup with Nashville. RM2014–25

11 BG 80 Boniek García C.D. Olimpia, C.D. MarathónVenezuela were beaten 3-0 on 4 September 2015, the night he collected his 100th Honduras cap, and he kept going until the count reached 134. He finished with eight Liga Nacional titles at Olimpia, the 2011 Copa Centroamericana, the 2018 US Open Cup at Houston Dynamo, where only one player has more assists, and all three group matches at the 2014 World Cup. 12 EB 80 Eduardo Bennett 36 caps · 19 goals · C.F. Cobras de Querétaro, San Lorenzo de AlmagroOn 28 June 1991 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, in the opening match of the first Gold Cup, Bennett stepped up in the 28th minute and scored the tournament's first ever goal, a penalty in a 4-2 win over Canada. He took the 1995 Clausura in Argentina with San Lorenzo, played three Gold Cups for Honduras, scored 19 goals in 36 caps, and hit 44 in 111 games for Argentinos Juniors. SS1991–95

13 GY 80 Gilberto Yearwood 46 caps · 1 goals · Elche CF, Real ValladolidEvery other man in Honduras's 1982 World Cup squad played his club football at home; el Vikingo played his at Real Valladolid, and Honduras opened the tournament in Valencia against the country that paid his wages. CONCACAF named him in its Team of the Century in 1998, Mundo Deportivo picked him in its 1981 La Liga team of the year, and he won three Honduran titles, the 1993 Copa Centroamericana and 46 caps. 14 JC 80 Julio César de León 83 caps · 14 goals · Platense, AS Reggina 1914Rambo was what Honduras called him, and Genoa's supporters came round to it too, voting him their player of the season in 2007-08. Third place at the 2001 Copa América, 83 caps and 14 goals, the 2010 Chinese Super League at Shandong Luneng, two Honduran Cups with Platense, and promotions with Reggina and Parma, where the free kicks did the work. Olimpia, Club Deportes ConcepciónPanama conceded four goals to Velásquez inside the first 45 minutes on 16 April 1997 at the UNCAF Nations Cup, the last a penalty as the half closed, in a 5-0 win. His 196 league goals remain the Honduran record, he won 13 titles with Olimpia, shared the 2005 Gold Cup Golden Boot, made that tournament's Best XI, and scored 35 times in 47 caps. ST1997–2005

Olimpia, Miami FusionAt 31 he arrived at Lockhart Stadium and scored 19 goals in 25 games for the Miami Fusion, a club Major League Soccer contracted out of existence three months after his best season ended. MLS Most Valuable Player and Golden Boot winner in 2001, the 1988 CONCACAF Champions' Cup with Olimpia, four Honduran league titles, the 1993 Copa Centroamericana and 45 caps. CAM1988–2001

79 Anthony Lozano C.D. Olimpia, Valencia CF MestallaCádiz had never won at Real Madrid until 17 October 2020, when his goal at the Alfredo Di Stéfano settled it 1-0. Honduras made him captain, and the record reads 64 caps and 16 goals, three Liga Nacional titles at Olimpia, bronze at the 2021 CONCACAF Nations League finals, and a hat-trick away at Villarreal in October 2021. Olimpia, Wigan AthleticWigan handed Thomas his Premier League debut against Aston Villa on 15 August 2009, and he set up a goal in a 2-0 win on his first appearance in English football. Five Liga Nacional titles with Olimpia sit at the top of his record, along with the 2008 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament, a place in the Honduras side at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, and 52 caps. 19 JL 79 José Luis Pineda They called him el Flaco, the skinny one, and he stayed at Olimpia from 1994 to 2006, long enough to win a record nine championship finals with the club. Nine Honduran titles with Olimpia, 52 caps between his January 1996 Gold Cup debut against Canada and a 2004 friendly with Panama, four international goals and 21 World Cup qualifiers. CB1994–2006

79 Roger Espinoza 52 caps · 4 goals · Sporting Arizona, Sporting Kansas CitySt James' Park stood for him on 4 August 2012: he scored past Brazil in the Olympic quarter-final, then took a red card in the 90th minute of a 3-2 defeat. He won the FA Cup with Wigan Athletic on 11 May 2013, playing all 90 minutes of the 1-0 win over Manchester City, added three US Open Cups at Sporting Kansas City in 2012, 2015 and 2017, and went to two World Cups. MotaguaHonduras came away from the 2010 World Cup with a single point, the goalless draw against Switzerland on 25 June, and Bernárdez played all ninety minutes of it in the middle of the defence. Two World Cups in 2010 and 2014, the Belgian championship with Anderlecht, the Supporters' Shield and a Best XI selection with San Jose in 2012, and a league title with Motagua make up his record. 22 DT 78 Danilo Tosello An Argentine from Santa Fe, he signed for Olimpia in 1999 and gave the club eight seasons, 298 league games and 86 goals, which leaves him ninth on the Liga Nacional's all-time scoring list. Six Honduran league titles as a player between 2000 and 2006, then three more in charge of the same club in 2012 and 2013. CAM1999–2013

23 JV 78 Jaime Villegas 32 caps · Real C.D. EspañaReal España had him from 1968 to 1986, and no one else in the Honduran league had played 309 matches when he finally stopped. He won the 1981 CONCACAF Championship, the tournament that carried Honduras to their first World Cup in Spain a year later, along with four Honduran league titles, the 1972 national cup and the 1982 Copa Interclubes UNCAF, across 32 caps. 78 Jerry Bengtson 54 caps · 21 goals · C.D.S. Vida, F.C. MotaguaSeven minutes into Honduras against Spain at St James' Park on 29 July 2012, Bengtson scored the goal that won it 1-0 and sent Spain out of the Olympics without scoring in the tournament. He played at the 2014 World Cup, won nine league titles with Olimpia and the 2011 Clausura with Motagua, took the Honduran scoring crown eight times, and finished with 23 goals in 70 caps. ST2011–14

Marathón, Zhejiang ProfessionalHis World Cup came down to one match: on 25 June 2010, at 31, he played the full ninety of a goalless draw with Switzerland, the single point Honduras took from South Africa and their first at a finals in 28 years. 26 OC 78 Osman Chávez Platense, F.C. MotaguaHonduras had waited 28 years for another World Cup when South Africa 2010 came, and he stood in the middle of the defence for all three group matches. He took the Ekstraklasa with Wisła Kraków in his first Polish season, 2010-11, won the 2007 Copa Interclubes UNCAF, claimed bronze at the 2009 Copa Centroamericana, and returned to the World Cup in Brazil in 2014 among 55 caps. 27 SC 78 Samuel Caballero 71 caps · C.D. Olimpia, Udinese CalcioFour seasons into a spell at Changchun Yatai that ran to 110 appearances, Caballero was voted the most valuable player in the Chinese Super League for 2009. He was part of the Honduras squad that finished third at the 2001 Copa América, won the Chinese title in 2007 and four Honduran championships with Olimpia, made the 2005 Gold Cup Best XI, and played 71 times for his country. OlimpiaIn the 67th minute of the 2013 Copa Centroamericana semi-final in San José he scored the goal that beat Belize, the only one of his 66 caps, and Honduras went through to the final. A World Cup in Brazil in 2014, runner-up at that 2013 Copa Centroamericana, promotion with Necaxa in 2015-16, the Copa MX in Clausura 2018 and the Supercopa MX that year. RB2013–18

29 JU 77 Jorge Urquía 11 caps · 3 goals · Atlético Indio, RCD MallorcaFew expected the call at his age, but Honduras named him for the 1981 CONCACAF Championship and he scored in the 4-0 win over Haiti. Honduras won that tournament and their first World Cup place with it; he had already taken the 1972 CONCACAF Champions' Cup and two Liga Nacional titles at Olimpia, and spent five years in Spain with Mallorca and Alavés. 30 WM 77 Walter Martínez 49 caps · 12 goals · Club Deportivo Victoria, C.D. MarathónHis penalty in the 36th minute knocked Canada out of the 2009 Gold Cup quarter-final on 18 July, a week after he had opened the scoring against Grenada inside two minutes. Martínez played all three Honduras matches at the 2010 World Cup, made the 2009 Gold Cup All-Tournament Team, scored 12 goals in 49 caps, and had spells at Beijing Guoan, Alavés and San Jose before his death in 2019 at 37. MotaguaMotagua's goal was his for eight seasons and 129 league games, and in December 2012 he collected his second award as the Liga Nacional's least beaten goalkeeper. 32 JP 76 Johnny Palacios 19 caps · C.D. OlimpiaJerry and Wilson travelled to South Africa in 2010 alongside him, the first three brothers ever named in one nation's World Cup squad. Ten Liga Nacional titles came with Olimpia, the only club he played for, across 224 league matches, plus the 2011 Copa Centroamericana with Honduras and 42 caps between 2009 and 2017. CB2009–17

OlimpiaA bicycle kick from García levelled the World Cup qualifier against the United States at the Estadio Olímpico Metropolitano on 6 February 2013, four minutes after Clint Dempsey had put the visitors ahead, and Honduras won it 2-1. He went to the 2014 World Cup, played three Gold Cups, won 39 caps, and moved from Olimpia to Wigan Athletic in 2013 before he was diagnosed with leukaemia in February 2015 and died in January 2018, aged 29.
