His penalty in the 36th minute knocked Canada out of the 2009 Gold Cup quarter-final on 18 July, a week after he had opened the scoring against Grenada inside two minutes. Martínez played all three Honduras matches at the 2010 World Cup, made the 2009 Gold Cup All-Tournament Team, scored 12 goals in 49 caps, and had spells at Beijing Guoan, Alavés and San Jose before his death in 2019 at 37.
