He won the Africa Cup of Nations four times, in 1998, 2006, 2008 and 2010, was voted best player of the tournament in both 2006 and 2010, and retired on 184 caps, then a world record for a male international. 89 Mohamed Aboutrika 100 caps · 38 goals · Al Ahly SC, Baniyas SCAt the 2008 finals in Ghana he scored against Sudan, pulled his shirt over his head and stood in a white vest reading Sympathize with Gaza. He took the decisive penalty in the 2006 Cup of Nations final and scored the only goal of the 2008 one, won five CAF Champions Leagues and seven league titles with Al Ahly, and was BBC African Footballer of the Year in 2008. Egypt's record scorer with 69 goals in 177 caps, he won the Cup of Nations in 1986, took the 1998 Golden Boot with seven goals as Egypt won it again, captained the 2006 winners at 40, and lifted African club titles with Al Ahly in 1987 and Zamalek in 2002. 87 Mahmoud El Khatib 54 caps · 24 goals · Al Ahly SCCairo knew him as Bibo, and in more than 450 matches for Al Ahly he collected a single booking, which brought him FIFA's Fair Play prize in 1987. African Footballer of the Year in 1983, he won the Cup of Nations on home soil in 1986, two African Cup of Champions Clubs in 1982 and 1987, three Cup Winners' Cups and ten Egyptian league titles, with 24 goals in 54 caps. 86 Hassan Shehata 52 caps · 14 goals · Zamalek SC, Kazma Sporting ClubZamalek supporters still count him second on the club's all-time scoring list, a forward who led the Egyptian league in goals in 1976-77 and again in 1979-80. Bronze and the best midfielder award at the 1974 Cup of Nations were his high points as a player, with 14 goals in 52 caps, and from the touchline he then won the tournament three times running, in 2006, 2008 and 2010, the only coach to do it. 8 MB 86 Mohamed Barakat 70 caps · 9 goals · Al-Sekka Al-Hadid, Ismaily SCAl Ahly fans named the front three of Barakat, Aboutrika and Emad Moteab the Bermuda Triangle, and in 2005 he finished the CAF Champions League as its joint top scorer with seven goals. That season brought him the BBC African Footballer of the Year award and CAF's prize for the best player based in Africa; he won four CAF Champions Leagues and seven league titles with Al Ahly, and the 2006 Cup of Nations with Egypt. Six CAF Champions Leagues with Al Ahly, in 2001, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2012 and 2013, seven Egyptian league titles, three Cup of Nations winners' medals, and 114 caps that produced exactly one goal, against Kenya in 2011. 11 HR 85 Hany Ramzy 124 caps · Neuchâtel Xamax FCS, SV Werder BremenIn summer 1994 Werder Bremen paid around 1.5 million dollars for him, then the highest fee for an Egyptian, and he became the first from his country to play in the Bundesliga. The 1998 Africa Cup of Nations title came in the middle of five straight Nations Cups and 123 caps between 1988 and 2003, alongside a place at Italia 90, the best libero award in 1992, and a league title and cup with Al Ahly. 12 HE 85 Hazem Emam 86 caps · 15 goals · Zamalek SC, Udinese CalcioHis first match for Udinese, against Perugia, ended in tears when he was substituted after the team went down to ten men, and supporters brought a banner to the next game saying his tears were worth more than a thousand goals. He won the 1998 Africa Cup of Nations, two CAF Champions League titles with Zamalek in 1996 and 2002, three Egyptian league championships, and Egyptian player of the year in 2002 and 2003, from 87 caps. 13 M 85 Mido Cairo, 7 February 2006: Hassan Shehata pulled him off at 1-1 in the semi-final against Senegal, the two men shouted at each other on the touchline, and Amr Zaki came on and scored the winner within minutes. That 2006 title stands in his record all the same, alongside two Eredivisie championships with Ajax in 2002 and 2011, the Dutch cup, the African Cup Winners' Cup with Zamalek in 2000, and African Young Player of the Year. 14 TA 85 Taher Abouzeid Al Ahly SCA free kick in the 79th minute of the 1986 semi-final against Morocco settled it for Egypt in front of their own crowd in Cairo, and he ended the tournament as their leading scorer. Egypt took that Africa Cup of Nations on penalties against Cameroon, he was top scorer of the 1984 edition and of the 1981 Under-20 World Cup, and he won seven league titles, eight cups and two African Champions Cups with Al Ahly. 84 Emad Moteab 66 caps · 26 goals · Al Ahly SC, Al IttihadCairo, 14 November 2009: five minutes into stoppage time, Moteab met a cross with his head, Egypt led Algeria 2-0, and a World Cup play-off was forced out of nothing. He won the Africa Cup of Nations three times in a row, in 2006, 2008 and 2010, and collected four CAF Champions League titles and nine league championships at Al Ahly. ST2006–10

84 Hassan El-Shazly 62 caps · 42 goals · Tersana SCGhana 1963 was his tournament, six goals making him the leading scorer of the Nations Cup, and in 1974-75, at 32, he put 34 into a single Egyptian league season. Twelve goals leave him Egypt's record scorer at the Africa Cup of Nations, and he won the league with Tersana in 1962-63, the Egypt Cup twice, four domestic Golden Boots and third place at three Nations Cups. 17 IH 84 Ibrahim Hassan 125 caps · PAOK, Zamalek SCA free kick on 27 November 1991 beat Real Madrid 1-0 in Neuchâtel, the souvenir of the single European season in a career otherwise lived in Cairo. Al Ahly gave him ten Egyptian league titles, the African Cup of Champions Clubs in 1987 and four African Cup Winners' Cups; Zamalek added the CAF Champions League in 2002, and Egypt brought All-Africa Games gold in 1987 and 131 caps that took in Italia 90. 18 RE 84 Rifaat El-Fanagily Al Ahly SCAl Ahly had him for seventeen seasons, 1953 to 1970, and Egypt had him for the first four editions of the Africa Cup of Nations, back when the 1957 tournament in Khartoum ran to three teams. He won two of them, in 1957 and 1959, and was runner-up in 1962, alongside seven Egyptian league titles, 56 caps with 13 goals, and fourth place at the Tokyo Olympics in 1964. CM1953–70

84 Saleh Selim Al Ahly SC, Grazer AKAl Ahly knew him as El Maestro, and in 1963 he acted opposite Faten Hamama in The Open Door while still running the club's midfield. Egypt won the 1959 Africa Cup of Nations with him in the side and finished runner-up in 1962, and at Al Ahly he collected nine league titles in a row before returning as club president for two spells lasting nearly twenty years. 20 GA 83 Gamal Abdelhamid 59 caps · 19 goals · Al Ahly SC, Zamalek SCSeven goals in the 1986 African Cup of Champions Clubs made him its top scorer and Zamalek continental champions; four years later he led Egypt out at Italia 90 as captain. Egypt had taken that year's Africa Cup of Nations on home ground with him in the forward line, and the rest of his career brought three African club titles, the 1988 Nations Cup scoring prize, eight Egyptian league titles, 101 league goals and 24 goals in 79 internationals. 83 Mohamed Elneny 101 caps · Al Mokawloon Al Arab SC, FC BaselThe 2017 Nations Cup final was 22 minutes old when he shot from almost no angle at all in Libreville, beating Fabrice Ondoa at the near post to put Egypt in front of Cameroon. Runner-up from that night and from the 2021 final, where he made the team of the tournament, he also took four Swiss titles with Basel, the 2017 FA Cup and two Community Shields at Arsenal, and passed 100 Egypt caps. 22 MZ 83 Mohamed Zidan 44 caps · 13 goals · Akademisk Boldklub, SV Werder BremenJanuary 2008: he put two past Cameroon in Egypt's opening game at the Nations Cup, then supplied the pass Aboutrika turned into the winner when the same sides met in the final. That was the first of two Africa Cup of Nations titles, the second in 2010, when he also made the team of the tournament, and in Germany he became the first Bundesliga player to score in each of his opening six games for a new club. 82 Hossam Ghaly Al Ahly SC, Feyenoord RotterdamSubstituted against Blackburn at White Hart Lane on 10 May 2007, he pulled off his Tottenham shirt and threw it down, then apologised to his manager and the supporters. What came afterwards reads better: the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations, the CAF Champions League in 2012, five Egyptian league titles and three Egypt Cups, 70 caps for Egypt, and the Al Ahly captaincy he held from 2014 until retiring in 2018. 24 MA 82 Magdi Abdelghani 50 caps · Al Ahly SC, S.C. Beira-MarRonald Koeman gave away a penalty in Palermo on 12 June 1990 and Abdelghani converted it with seven minutes left, drawing Egypt level with the Netherlands and scoring the only goal his country managed at that World Cup. Four years earlier he had won the Nations Cup in Cairo and made its team of the tournament; Al Ahly brought him two African Champions Cups, in 1982 and 1987, seven league titles and five Egypt Cups. 82 Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet 73 caps · 16 goals · Al Ahly SC, Aston VillaA youth coach gave him the name Trezeguet at nine, and on 21 June 2019 he curled in the only goal against Zimbabwe to open the Nations Cup at Cairo International Stadium. Runner-up at the 2017 and 2021 Africa Cups of Nations, he scored the extra-time winner against Morocco in the quarter-final of the second, won two CAF Champions League titles with Al Ahly and twice made the Süper Lig team of the season. 26 ML 82 Mohamed Latif Rangers, Zamalek SCA physical education student at Jordanhill in Glasgow, he scored seven times in sixteen Rangers reserve games and got one Scottish League appearance for it, a 1-1 draw at Easter Road against Hibernian in September 1935. He had already played for Egypt at the 1934 World Cup, the first African side to reach one, and went to the Berlin Olympics in 1936; with Zamalek he won six Egypt Cups and eight Cairo League titles. 27 NE 82 Nader El-Sayed 110 caps · Zamalek SC, Club Brugge K.V.Twenty-one penalties saved in shootouts over his career, and he was the goalkeeper who took Egypt through a goalless 1998 quarter-final against Ivory Coast, settled 5-4 from the spot. Egypt lifted the Nations Cup in Ouagadougou a week later and he was named its best goalkeeper, an award he won again in 2000 to become the first Egyptian to take it twice; 110 caps between 1992 and 2005. 28 EE 80 Emad El Nahhas Aswan SC, Ismaily SCCentre-backs are not supposed to score eight in a league season, but he managed exactly that for Al Ahly in 2005-06, a hat-trick against Al Ittihad Alexandria included. Three CAF Champions League wins came in 2005, 2006 and 2008, alongside five straight Egyptian league titles from 2004-05, an earlier championship with Ismaily in 2001-02, three African Super Cups and 43 caps for Egypt. 29 IS 80 Ibrahim Said 72 caps · Al Ahly SC, Zamalek SCHe was on the pitch for almost all of the 2006 final in Cairo, holding Ivory Coast to nothing until Hassan Shehata replaced him in the second half of extra time; Egypt won the shootout 4-2. The Nations Cup came again in 2008, after the CAF Champions League with Al Ahly in 2001 and the CAF Super Cup in 2002; two Egyptian league titles, two Egypt Cups, Pan Arab Games gold in 2007 and 50 caps round it out. 30 SM 80 Sayed Moawad 79 caps · Aluminium Nag Hammâdi, Al Ahly SCNumber 14 in Accra on 10 February 2008, ninety minutes at left midfield while Aboutrika settled the final against Cameroon, and two years later he started the Luanda final at left back too. Those were the middle and the last of Egypt's three Nations Cups in a row; with Al Ahly he won the African Champions League in 2008 and 2012, and he retired in 2014 after 79 caps. LB2008–14

31 ME 79 Mohamed Emara 47 caps · Baladeyet El-Mahalla, Al Ahly SCHansa Rostock signed him from Al Ahly in 1998 and played him on the left for four Bundesliga seasons, 76 league appearances and not one goal, which was never the job. He took the 1998 Africa Cup of Nations with Egypt, made the team of the tournament there and again in 2000, won the Egyptian league in 1998 and the Egypt Cup in 2003, and finished on 68 caps. 32 RY 78 Rabie Yassin 44 caps · Al Ahly SCThe 1986 Nations Cup ended with Egypt champions on home soil and him in the team of the tournament, a defender who had come through Al Ahly and stayed thirteen years. He played all three group games at Italia 90, Egypt's first World Cup since 1934, and gathered seven Egyptian league titles, five Egypt Cups and five African club trophies across 310 appearances for Al Ahly. 33 SK 78 Samir Kamouna 36 caps · 1. FC Kaiserslautern, BursasporEighty-five minutes gone at the Azteca on 27 July 1999 and it was the centre-back arriving to make it 2-2 with Mexico at the Confederations Cup, one of eight goals he scored in 45 Egypt caps. The 1998 Nations Cup in Burkina Faso was his too, alongside two Egyptian league titles with Al Ahly, the 1991 African Youth Championship, and a season in the Bundesliga at Kaiserslautern. CB1991–99
