Twenty-one penalties saved in shootouts over his career, and he was the goalkeeper who took Egypt through a goalless 1998 quarter-final against Ivory Coast, settled 5-4 from the spot. Egypt lifted the Nations Cup in Ouagadougou a week later and he was named its best goalkeeper, an award he won again in 2000 to become the first Egyptian to take it twice; 110 caps between 1992 and 2005.
