Al Ahly knew him as El Maestro, and in 1963 he acted opposite Faten Hamama in The Open Door while still running the club's midfield. Egypt won the 1959 Africa Cup of Nations with him in the side and finished runner-up in 1962, and at Al Ahly he collected nine league titles in a row before returning as club president for two spells lasting nearly twenty years.
