A free kick in the 79th minute of the 1986 semi-final against Morocco settled it for Egypt in front of their own crowd in Cairo, and he ended the tournament as their leading scorer. Egypt took that Africa Cup of Nations on penalties against Cameroon, he was top scorer of the 1984 edition and of the 1981 Under-20 World Cup, and he won seven league titles, eight cups and two African Champions Cups with Al Ahly.
