Twente's 3-3 draw with Tottenham on 7 December 2010 carried a small piece of history, because his goal was the first scored by a Venezuelan in the Champions League. He won the KNVB Cup with Twente in 2011 and two Johan Cruijff Shields, scored in the final match of 2018/19 that took Espanyol back into Europe after twelve years, played 96 times for Venezuela and was part of the side that finished fourth at the 2011 Copa América. Between 2008 and 2025 he answered the call 143 times, more than anyone else in Venezuelan football, and the nickname stuck: El General, the man who held the ground in front of the back four. He won Serie A and the Coppa Italia with Juventus in 2016/17, took the fans' player of the tournament award at the 2011 Copa América, and wore the armband at the Centenario in 2016 and the Copa América of 2019.
