Few goalkeepers get on the scoresheet against Argentina, and he did it from a direct free kick in qualifying for the 1998 World Cup, the one goal he scored in 56 games for Venezuela. He gave four seasons and 142 league games to Deportivo Cali, played across Venezuela, Colombia, Argentina and South Africa, and later coached Venezuela's under-20 side to the 2017 World Cup final. Between 2008 and 2025 he answered the call 143 times, more than anyone else in Venezuelan football, and the nickname stuck: El General, the man who held the ground in front of the back four. He won Serie A and the Coppa Italia with Juventus in 2016/17, took the fans' player of the tournament award at the 2011 Copa América, and wore the armband at the Centenario in 2016 and the Copa América of 2019.
