Between 2008 and 2025 he answered the call 143 times, more than anyone else in Venezuelan football, and the nickname stuck: El General, the man who held the ground in front of the back four. He won Serie A and the Coppa Italia with Juventus in 2016/17, took the fans' player of the tournament award at the 2011 Copa América, and wore the armband at the Centenario in 2016 and the Copa América of 2019. Herrera finished that tournament as a runner-up, won the Venezuelan second division with Atlético Venezuela in 2015, joined Manchester City in 2017, and later helped Girona to third in La Liga and a first Champions League place in 2023/24.
