Between 2008 and 2025 he answered the call 143 times, more than anyone else in Venezuelan football, and the nickname stuck: El General, the man who held the ground in front of the back four. He won Serie A and the Coppa Italia with Juventus in 2016/17, took the fans' player of the tournament award at the 2011 Copa América, and wore the armband at the Centenario in 2016 and the Copa América of 2019.
