When Conmebol picked its team of the 2024 Copa América, Johnston was the only player on the list who did not come from South America, chosen after Canada beat Venezuela on penalties and went out to Argentina in the semi-final. At Celtic he won a domestic treble within six months of arriving in January 2023 and now has four Scottish Premiership titles, three Scottish Cups and two League Cups. Wearing the armband at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on 27 February 2000, he scored on the stroke of half time against Colombia, and Canada held on to lift the Gold Cup for the first and so far only time. Beyond that title came Gold Cup bronze in 2002, Canadian player of the year the same season, Wigan's Second Division championship in 2003, and 49 caps, most of them as captain between 1999 and 2004. Career record: club career at Dundee United, Wigan Athletic, Ipswich Town.
