Canada reached the 2000 Gold Cup knockouts on a coin toss, then Forrest pushed away a first-half penalty in the 1-0 semi-final against Trinidad and Tobago and kept a clean sheet three days later as Colombia were beaten 2-0 in the Los Angeles Coliseum final. He was named the tournament's most valuable player of Canada's only Gold Cup, and finished with 61 caps and 263 games in goal for Ipswich Town. Wearing the armband at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on 27 February 2000, he scored on the stroke of half time against Colombia, and Canada held on to lift the Gold Cup for the first and so far only time. Beyond that title came Gold Cup bronze in 2002, Canadian player of the year the same season, Wigan's Second Division championship in 2003, and 49 caps, most of them as captain between 1999 and 2004.
