Uruguay led the 1970 semi-final for twenty-five minutes because Cubilla scored past Brazil in Guadalajara on 17 June, and only Clodoaldo's goal just before the interval pulled the eventual champions level. He won three Copa Libertadores, two with Peñarol in 1960 and 1961 and a third with Nacional in 1971, added the 1971 Intercontinental Cup, took four league titles at each club, and played at the World Cups of 1962, 1970 and 1974.
