Moved forward from centre-half to stand in for Pedro Cea against Peru on 11 November 1929, the Galician-born Fernández scored three in a 4-1 win, then went back to holding the middle of the field. He won the 1930 World Cup, one of the outstanding men in the final at the Centenario, along with Olympic gold in 1928, the 1926 and 1935 Copa América, and four Uruguayan titles at Peñarol.
