Peñarol handed him the armband for the run that defined the club, five Uruguayan titles in a row from 1958 to 1962 and the first two editions of the Copa Libertadores in 1960 and 1961. Martínez was in the 1950 World Cup squad that won at the Maracanã, took the 1961 Intercontinental Cup, the 1956 Copa América, and was picked in the All-Star team of the 1954 World Cup.
