The 21st-minute goal he scored in San José on 14 November 2009 settled the play-off first leg against Costa Rica and sent Uruguay to a World Cup they would finish fourth in. He captained that side and the one that won the 2011 Copa América, lifting the trophy in Buenos Aires and making the tournament's best eleven, after the 2005 Copa Libertadores and Club World Cup with São Paulo and two Süper Lig titles at Fenerbahçe.
