Between 2008 and 2025 he answered the call 143 times, more than anyone else in Venezuelan football, and the nickname stuck: El General, the man who held the ground in front of the back four. He won Serie A and the Coppa Italia with Juventus in 2016/17, took the fans' player of the tournament award at the 2011 Copa América, and wore the armband at the Centenario in 2016 and the Copa América of 2019. Nineteen years old at the 2017 under-20 World Cup, he made four saves against Uruguay in the semi-final and then stopped two penalties in the shootout to put Venezuela into a World Cup final for the first time. He finished that tournament as a runner-up with 506 minutes unbeaten, was voted Venezuela's best goalkeeper in 2016 and 2017, won the 2018 Superliga Colombiana with Millonarios and kept clean sheets against Peru and Brazil at the 2019 Copa América.
