Easter Road called him the Little Magician, and in 1998-99 he made the name stick, running Hibernian out of the First Division as champions and taking the division's player of the year award. He had already won back-to-back Portuguese titles with Porto in 1995 and 1996, becoming the first Trinidadian in the Champions League, then a Portuguese Cup with Boavista, and he closed with 81 caps, 29 goals and a place at the 2006 World Cup. Columbus Crew gave him his first MLS season in 1998 and he answered with 26 goals in 27 games, three hat-tricks among them, the first player in the league to manage that in one year, and he took the Golden Boot. Seventy goals in 115 caps stand as the Trinidad and Tobago record, alongside Caribbean Cup wins in 1996, 1999 and 2001, all three games at the 2006 World Cup, and a Championship title with Sunderland.
