The Argentine press named him the Black Diamond after his nights against River Plate, and on 23 August 1981 he scored two minutes into the second half at the Centenario to beat Uruguay 2-1 and push Peru towards Spain. At the Berlin Olympics in August 1936 he scored in extra time as Peru came from two down to beat Austria 4-2, a result annulled days later and never replayed because his country walked out of the tournament.
