Peru's captain for the better part of fifteen years, he led an all-star Americas XI out at the Camp Nou on 31 October 1973 against Europe's best, converted the equalising penalty, and left Barcelona with the name that stuck, Capitán de América. At the Berlin Olympics in August 1936 he scored in extra time as Peru came from two down to beat Austria 4-2, a result annulled days later and never replayed because his country walked out of the tournament.
