Peru's captain for the better part of fifteen years, he led an all-star Americas XI out at the Camp Nou on 31 October 1973 against Europe's best, converted the equalising penalty, and left Barcelona with the name that stuck, Capitán de América. He won the Copa América in 1975, reached the quarter-finals of the 1970 World Cup and returned in 1978, and took five Peruvian titles at Universitario and three at Sporting Cristal across 105 caps. Six minutes after his penalty against Scotland in Córdoba on 3 June 1978, he curled a free kick into the top corner with the outside of his right foot. Peru won the 1975 Copa América with him as its best player, and he scored five goals at both the 1970 and 1978 World Cups, one of six men ever to manage that twice, alongside the 1970 young player award and 26 goals in 81 caps.
