Peru's captain for the better part of fifteen years, he led an all-star Americas XI out at the Camp Nou on 31 October 1973 against Europe's best, converted the equalising penalty, and left Barcelona with the name that stuck, Capitán de América. He won the Copa América in 1975, reached the quarter-finals of the 1970 World Cup and returned in 1978, and took five Peruvian titles at Universitario and three at Sporting Cristal across 105 caps. The Argentine press named him the Black Diamond after his nights against River Plate, and on 23 August 1981 he scored two minutes into the second half at the Centenario to beat Uruguay 2-1 and push Peru towards Spain. Four Peruvian championships with Sporting Cristal, the Mexican title with Club América in 1987-88, the 1982 World Cup, 39 caps with nine goals, and third place in the 1981 South American player of the year vote behind Maradona and Zico. Career record: 39 caps and 9 goals for Peru; club career at Cagliari Calcio, Tecos, Deportivo Independiente Medellín.
