The Argentine press named him the Black Diamond after his nights against River Plate, and on 23 August 1981 he scored two minutes into the second half at the Centenario to beat Uruguay 2-1 and push Peru towards Spain. Four Peruvian championships with Sporting Cristal, the Mexican title with Club América in 1987-88, the 1982 World Cup, 39 caps with nine goals, and third place in the 1981 South American player of the year vote behind Maradona and Zico. Career record: 39 caps and 9 goals for Peru; club career at Cagliari Calcio, Tecos, Deportivo Independiente Medellín.

La 12 sang him his own chant at the Bombonera, y ya lo ve, es el peruano y su ballet, and Boca Juniors, who signed him in 1968, ended up putting the captain's armband on a Peruvian centre-back.
