Guinea were losing to Nigeria on 8 October 2011 when Traoré struck in the twelfth minute of stoppage time, and the 2-2 draw that followed carried them to the next year's Africa Cup of Nations. He scored 8 goals for Guinea and played three Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, in 2012, 2015 and 2019, after a German career that ran from a Hertha debut in December 2007 through Augsburg and Stuttgart to seven seasons at Borussia Mönchengladbach. Conakry gave his name to a stadium in Nongo in 2021, four decades after he left Hafia, where he played from 1965 to 1981 and scored against Ethiopia at the 1976 Cup of Nations. Three African Champions Cups with Hafia, in 1972, 1975 and 1977, head his record, with a place in the 1976 Cup of Nations team of the tournament, third place in the 1972 African Footballer of the Year vote, and 36 caps for Guinea.
