He scored in both legs of the 1972 African Cup of Champions Clubs final, on 35 minutes in Conakry and 67 in Kampala, as Hafia beat Simba 7-4 to become the first Guinean club to win Africa. African Footballer of the Year in 1972, still Guinea's only winner, he added Champions Cups in 1975 and 1977 and went unbeaten through the 1976 Cup of Nations, where Guinea lost the title to Morocco by a single point. Guinea were losing to Nigeria on 8 October 2011 when Traoré struck in the twelfth minute of stoppage time, and the 2-2 draw that followed carried them to the next year's Africa Cup of Nations. He scored 8 goals for Guinea and played three Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, in 2012, 2015 and 2019, after a German career that ran from a Hertha debut in December 2007 through Augsburg and Stuttgart to seven seasons at Borussia Mönchengladbach.
