Guinea were losing to Nigeria on 8 October 2011 when Traoré struck in the twelfth minute of stoppage time, and the 2-2 draw that followed carried them to the next year's Africa Cup of Nations. He scored 8 goals for Guinea and played three Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, in 2012, 2015 and 2019, after a German career that ran from a Hertha debut in December 2007 through Augsburg and Stuttgart to seven seasons at Borussia Mönchengladbach. He was 18 and had never scored a professional goal when he settled the last afternoon of the 1998-99 season, a 3-2 win at Paris Saint-Germain on 29 May that handed Bordeaux the championship. The 2002 Coupe de France with Lorient came next, then 34 goals in 138 games for Saint-Étienne, and 30 in 85 for Guinea, including four at the 2006 Nations Cup, one behind Eto'o, with a place in the team of the tournament.
