He was 18 and had never scored a professional goal when he settled the last afternoon of the 1998-99 season, a 3-2 win at Paris Saint-Germain on 29 May that handed Bordeaux the championship. The 2002 Coupe de France with Lorient came next, then 34 goals in 138 games for Saint-Étienne, and 30 in 85 for Guinea, including four at the 2006 Nations Cup, one behind Eto'o, with a place in the team of the tournament.

The morning after his father died in Guinea he played anyway, scored the winner against West Ham at Anfield in October 1999, and dropped to his knees in tears in front of the Anfield Road end. Marseille had taken him to the 1999 UEFA Cup final, Liverpool's supporters voted him into the 100 Players Who Shook The Kop, and Guinea got 27 goals in 57 caps, three of them in the group stage of the 2004 Nations Cup.
