Conakry gave his name to a stadium in Nongo in 2021, four decades after he left Hafia, where he played from 1965 to 1981 and scored against Ethiopia at the 1976 Cup of Nations. Three African Champions Cups with Hafia, in 1972, 1975 and 1977, head his record, with a place in the 1976 Cup of Nations team of the tournament, third place in the 1972 African Footballer of the Year vote, and 36 caps for Guinea. The morning after his father died in Guinea he played anyway, scored the winner against West Ham at Anfield in October 1999, and dropped to his knees in tears in front of the Anfield Road end. Marseille had taken him to the 1999 UEFA Cup final, Liverpool's supporters voted him into the 100 Players Who Shook The Kop, and Guinea got 27 goals in 57 caps, three of them in the group stage of the 2004 Nations Cup.
