He was 18 and had never scored a professional goal when he settled the last afternoon of the 1998-99 season, a 3-2 win at Paris Saint-Germain on 29 May that handed Bordeaux the championship. The 2002 Coupe de France with Lorient came next, then 34 goals in 138 games for Saint-Étienne, and 30 in 85 for Guinea, including four at the 2006 Nations Cup, one behind Eto'o, with a place in the team of the tournament.

Conakry gave his name to a stadium in Nongo in 2021, four decades after he left Hafia, where he played from 1965 to 1981 and scored against Ethiopia at the 1976 Cup of Nations. Three African Champions Cups with Hafia, in 1972, 1975 and 1977, head his record, with a place in the 1976 Cup of Nations team of the tournament, third place in the 1972 African Footballer of the Year vote, and 36 caps for Guinea.
