Guinea were losing to Nigeria on 8 October 2011 when Traoré struck in the twelfth minute of stoppage time, and the 2-2 draw that followed carried them to the next year's Africa Cup of Nations. He scored 8 goals for Guinea and played three Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, in 2012, 2015 and 2019, after a German career that ran from a Hertha debut in December 2007 through Augsburg and Stuttgart to seven seasons at Borussia Mönchengladbach. The morning after his father died in Guinea he played anyway, scored the winner against West Ham at Anfield in October 1999, and dropped to his knees in tears in front of the Anfield Road end. Marseille had taken him to the 1999 UEFA Cup final, Liverpool's supporters voted him into the 100 Players Who Shook The Kop, and Guinea got 27 goals in 57 caps, three of them in the group stage of the 2004 Nations Cup.
