Wearing the armband at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on 27 February 2000, he scored on the stroke of half time against Colombia, and Canada held on to lift the Gold Cup for the first and so far only time. Beyond that title came Gold Cup bronze in 2002, Canadian player of the year the same season, Wigan's Second Division championship in 2003, and 49 caps, most of them as captain between 1999 and 2004. Deportivo La Coruña's supporters voted him their player of the season in 2007/08, the year the club climbed from relegation trouble into the UEFA Cup, after a 2005 arrival that made him the first Canadian in La Liga. He was named most valuable player of the 2007 Gold Cup, Canadian player of the year in 2008, and became Toronto's first Designated Player in 2009, retiring on 89 caps, a national record he held from 2015 to 2021.
