On 17 April 2009 he became the first player in MLS history to reach both 100 goals and 100 assists, thirteen years after arriving in Washington from Middlesbrough, where he had been the first Bolivian to play in the Premier League. He retired as the league's all-time leading scorer on 131 goals, with four MLS Cups at D.C. United between 1996 and 2004, the 1997 Golden Boot, 75 Bolivia caps and the 1994 World Cup.
