On 17 April 2009 he became the first player in MLS history to reach both 100 goals and 100 assists, thirteen years after arriving in Washington from Middlesbrough, where he had been the first Bolivian to play in the Premier League. He retired as the league's all-time leading scorer on 131 goals, with four MLS Cups at D.C. United between 1996 and 2004, the 1997 Golden Boot, 75 Bolivia caps and the 1994 World Cup. El Emperador scored in back-to-back matches at the 1997 Copa América on home soil, against Peru on 15 June and then the only goal against Uruguay three days later, and Bolivia came through the group without conceding. He finished that tournament as runner-up to Brazil, won three Bolivian championships with Bolívar in 1992, 1994 and 1996, played at the 1994 World Cup, and collected 85 caps for Bolivia between 1991 and 2005.
