On 17 April 2009 he became the first player in MLS history to reach both 100 goals and 100 assists, thirteen years after arriving in Washington from Middlesbrough, where he had been the first Bolivian to play in the Premier League. He retired as the league's all-time leading scorer on 131 goals, with four MLS Cups at D.C. United between 1996 and 2004, the 1997 Golden Boot, 75 Bolivia caps and the 1994 World Cup. Bolivia's first World Cup match in 44 years came on 17 June 1994 against Germany, and Etcheverry lasted about four minutes off the bench before a kick at Lothar Matthäus got him sent off. El Diablo won three MLS Cups with D.C. United in 1996, 1997 and 1999, was named league MVP in 1998, added the CONCACAF Champions' Cup and Copa Interamericana in 1998, and reached the 1997 Copa América final with Bolivia, scoring 13 goals in 71 caps.
