On 13 October 2007 he beat Ecuador in Quito with a free kick, a 1-0 result that ended six years without a home defeat for the hosts, and on 6 September 2008 he became the first Venezuelan to play 100 internationals. Rey played in six Copa América tournaments, including the fourth place of 2011 that stands as Venezuela's best, won five Venezuelan league titles with Caracas and the Chilean championship with Colo-Colo in 2009. Between 2008 and 2025 he answered the call 143 times, more than anyone else in Venezuelan football, and the nickname stuck: El General, the man who held the ground in front of the back four. He won Serie A and the Coppa Italia with Juventus in 2016/17, took the fans' player of the tournament award at the 2011 Copa América, and wore the armband at the Centenario in 2016 and the Copa América of 2019.
