Eight goals in seven matches at the 1994 Hiroshima Asian Games, two against Saudi Arabia on 1 October and two against Malaysia two days later, made him both top scorer and best player of the tournament. Uzbekistan took the gold medal there, beating China 4-2 in the final; he scored 20 in 31 caps for his country and 121 for Pakhtakor, and won league titles in Malaysia in 1995, Uzbekistan in 1998 and India in 2000. Bunyodkor signed him in 2007, and in 2008, his first full season, he scored 19 league goals from midfield to finish as the Uzbek top scorer and Asia's Footballer of the Year. He won that award a second time in 2011, lifted nine Uzbek league titles and eight cups with Pakhtakor, Bunyodkor and Lokomotiv Tashkent, took the K League with FC Seoul in 2010, and left the national team on 128 caps and 25 goals.
