On 12 September 1995 he scored against Liverpool in the UEFA Cup for Alania Vladikavkaz, one of 210 goals across a career that took him from Soviet football to Samara and back to Tashkent. Gold at the 1994 Asian Games, where Uzbekistan beat China 4-2 in the Hiroshima final and he was named Asia's best midfielder, heads a record of 67 caps and 31 goals, later followed by three Uzbek titles as Bunyodkor's coach. Bunyodkor signed him in 2007, and in 2008, his first full season, he scored 19 league goals from midfield to finish as the Uzbek top scorer and Asia's Footballer of the Year. He won that award a second time in 2011, lifted nine Uzbek league titles and eight cups with Pakhtakor, Bunyodkor and Lokomotiv Tashkent, took the K League with FC Seoul in 2010, and left the national team on 128 caps and 25 goals.
