He struck first when Uzbekistan met the hosts Qatar in Doha on 7 January 2011, a 2-0 win that opened a run to the Asian Cup semi-finals and set the tone for a career built on shooting from range. Shanghai SIPG made him Chinese Super League champion in 2018, Pakhtakor had given him two Uzbek titles and three cups, and six Uzbekistan Player of the Year awards came with 108 caps and 21 goals.
