Eight goals in seven matches at the 1994 Hiroshima Asian Games, two against Saudi Arabia on 1 October and two against Malaysia two days later, made him both top scorer and best player of the tournament. Uzbekistan took the gold medal there, beating China 4-2 in the final; he scored 20 in 31 caps for his country and 121 for Pakhtakor, and won league titles in Malaysia in 1995, Uzbekistan in 1998 and India in 2000. Arriving at Dynamo Kyiv in 1999, he scored 97 league goals for them over a decade and left the Ukrainian top flight tied with Serhii Rebrov as its all-time leading scorer on 123. Six Ukrainian championships and five cups came with that, along with two seasons as league top scorer, four Uzbek Footballer of the Year awards, and 34 goals in 61 caps that carried Uzbekistan to fourth place at the 2011 Asian Cup.
