On 20 November 2022 he led the hosts out against Ecuador, the opening match of a World Cup Qatar had waited twelve years to stage. Al-Haydos lifted the Asian Cup as captain in 2019 and again in 2023, retired in March 2024 as Qatar's most capped player on 188 appearances, and won eight league titles and the 2011 AFC Champions League with Al Sadd. At the 1992 Gulf Cup he finished as top scorer and was voted player of the tournament, and thirteen years later he carried Al-Khor to their first major trophy in 46 years. Mustafa scored 41 goals in 106 internationals between 1992 and 2004, won the 1998 Arab Nations Cup, reached the Barcelona Olympic quarter-finals with Qatar, led the domestic scoring charts three times, and left international football without a single red card.
