On 20 November 2022 he led the hosts out against Ecuador, the opening match of a World Cup Qatar had waited twelve years to stage. Al-Haydos lifted the Asian Cup as captain in 2019 and again in 2023, retired in March 2024 as Qatar's most capped player on 188 appearances, and won eight league titles and the 2011 AFC Champions League with Al Sadd. Al Sadd's terraces called him Khalfaninho, and in November 2006, aged eighteen, he became the first Qatari named AFC Player of the Year, months before a knee injury against Bahrain took a year out of him. Ibrahim won gold at the 2006 Asian Games, lifted the 2011 AFC Champions League with Al Sadd, and left the club as its record league scorer with 78 goals in 298 appearances.
