On 20 November 2022 he led the hosts out against Ecuador, the opening match of a World Cup Qatar had waited twelve years to stage. Al-Haydos lifted the Asian Cup as captain in 2019 and again in 2023, retired in March 2024 as Qatar's most capped player on 188 appearances, and won eight league titles and the 2011 AFC Champions League with Al Sadd.
