His ninth goal of the 2019 Asian Cup arrived as a bicycle kick against Japan in the final on 1 February, one more than Ali Daei managed in 1996 and a tournament record that still stands. Ali left Abu Dhabi with the title, the Golden Boot and the Best Player award, added the 2021 Gold Cup Golden Boot, and passed Mansour Muftah as Qatar's all-time leading scorer in November 2023.
