His ninth goal of the 2019 Asian Cup arrived as a bicycle kick against Japan in the final on 1 February, one more than Ali Daei managed in 1996 and a tournament record that still stands. Ali left Abu Dhabi with the title, the Golden Boot and the Best Player award, added the 2021 Gold Cup Golden Boot, and passed Mansour Muftah as Qatar's all-time leading scorer in November 2023. On 20 November 2022 he led the hosts out against Ecuador, the opening match of a World Cup Qatar had waited twelve years to stage. Al-Haydos lifted the Asian Cup as captain in 2019 and again in 2023, retired in March 2024 as Qatar's most capped player on 188 appearances, and won eight league titles and the 2011 AFC Champions League with Al Sadd.
