On 4 July 1965 he settled the Copa del Generalísimo final at the Bernabéu, a 65th-minute goal that beat Real Zaragoza 1-0 in front of 90,000 and gave Atlético Madrid their revenge for losing the same final a year earlier. That cup sat alongside the 1965-66 Spanish league title with Atlético, and before Madrid he had been the Segunda División's top scorer with 22 goals as Elche won promotion in 1958-59, going on to 24 top-flight goals for the club. Honduras led the hosts in Valencia on 16 June 1982, Héctor Zelaya scoring inside eight minutes with Maradiaga captaining the midfield, and Spain needed a 65th-minute penalty to save the point. That team had reached the World Cup by winning the 1981 CONCACAF Championship at home, and Maradiaga's own record holds 47 caps, a league title with Motagua, and third place at the 2001 Copa América, taken from the bench as national coach.
