El Pájaro wore the armband when Venezuela hosted the Copa América in 2007, taking the country out of the group stage and playing all ninety minutes of the 4-1 quarter-final loss to Uruguay. Six Venezuelan league titles came at Caracas, plus the Copa Venezuela in 2009, and he finished with 58 caps built on World Cup qualifiers, Copa América campaigns and a long run as captain.
