
Thirteen minutes into a World Cup qualifier in Doha on 16 October 2012, Tursunov struck the only goal of the night and Uzbekistan left the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium with a win over Qatar. Voted Uzbekistan's Footballer of the Year for 2012, he had already helped the country to fourth place at the 2011 Asian Cup, won promotion from the Russian First Division with Volga Nizhny Novgorod in 2010, and finished with 49 caps and five goals.
