Casablanca had 45,000 in the ground on 23 March 1988 and Makanaky silenced them in the 78th minute, the only goal of the semi-final, which put the hosts out and Cameroon into the final. He won that Africa Cup of Nations, played all five matches of Cameroon's 1990 World Cup run to the quarter-finals, the first by an African side, and took two Ecuadorian league titles with Barcelona SC.
