On 13 October 2007 he beat Ecuador in Quito with a free kick, a 1-0 result that ended six years without a home defeat for the hosts, and on 6 September 2008 he became the first Venezuelan to play 100 internationals. Rey played in six Copa América tournaments, including the fourth place of 2011 that stands as Venezuela's best, won five Venezuelan league titles with Caracas and the Chilean championship with Colo-Colo in 2009. Nineteen years old at the 2017 under-20 World Cup, he made four saves against Uruguay in the semi-final and then stopped two penalties in the shootout to put Venezuela into a World Cup final for the first time. He finished that tournament as a runner-up with 506 minutes unbeaten, was voted Venezuela's best goalkeeper in 2016 and 2017, won the 2018 Superliga Colombiana with Millonarios and kept clean sheets against Peru and Brazil at the 2019 Copa América.
