UNESCO honoured him in 1992 for more than 750 matches without a single red card, most of them in seventeen years at Raja Casablanca, where he was simply Maestro. He played every game of Morocco's 1976 Africa Cup of Nations win, the country's only continental title until 2025, and every minute of the 1986 World Cup, when Morocco finished above England and Portugal and became the first African side in the last 16; three Throne Cups came at Raja. France Football's 1985 ballot gave him 113 points to Rabah Madjer's 45, and he is still the last African Footballer of the Year to have won it while playing his club football in Africa. That same year he lifted the African Cup of Champions Clubs with FAR Rabat and was voted its best player, then ran Morocco's midfield at the 1986 World Cup, where they became the first African side to reach the second round.
